HISTORY OF VAN CLEEF & ARPELS
In 1896, Alfred Van Cleef and Salomon Arpels founded Van Cleef & Arpels in Paris, France. The partnership didn’t only make sense because both families worked in the jewelry business, but also because Van Cleef had wed, Arpels’ daughter, Estelle, earlier in the year. In 1906, the duo trademarked the name Van Cleef & Arpels and opened up their first boutique. The boutique prospered and they quickly became prominent purveyors of some of the finest jewelry in France.
From 1909 to 1939, Van Cleef & Arpels expanded their franchise to open boutique shops in such notable resort locations as Monte Carlo, Nice, Le Touquet and Deauville. In 1942, the first Van Cleef & Arpels boutique opened up on American soil, on New York’s famous 5th Avenue. Not long after, the company was the first French jeweler to have boutiques in China and Japan.
Van Cleef & Arpels is recognized for their contributions to the jewelry industry, most notably the invention of the Mystery Setting, in which the gems are set and held in place without any visible bezels. Over the years, distinguished individuals from all around the world have worn jewelry designed by Van Cleef & Arpels, including Queen Nazli and King Farouk of Egypt, the Princess of Wales, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Liz Taylor, Mariah Carey, Madonna and Jacqueline Kennedy.
Since its founding, the company had been managed by a descendant of the Arpels family, until 1999 when it was acquired by the Compagnie Financière Richemont S.A. Today, Van Cleef & Arpels are still considered one of the most prestigious jewelry designers in the world and have since branched out into the realm of fashion with their own line of luxury fragrances called the Collection Extraordinaire.
