SALVADOR DALI - ARTISTS HISTORY

Salvador Dali was born in 1904 in an agricultural town in Spain. As one can plainly see from many of his paintings, Salvador Dali loved Spain. In 1925 Dali received rave reviews for his one-man show in Barcelona. Just three years later Salvador Dali would become known internationally for three of his paintings after a showing of them at the third annual Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh.

Although Salvador Dali was never limited to a particular style or media, he may best be known for his surrealist works, one of the most famous of which is The Persistence of Memory, depicting the melting of clocks. In 1934 Dali, who was apolitical, clashed with a number of Surrealists and was "expelled" from this group. Not deterred, Salvador Dali continued to show his surrealist works, but began focusing on painting that dealt with science and religion.

Salvador Dali spent several years in the United States and was honored with a retrospective exhibit in 1941 at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. His exploration of different artistic techniques continued as Dali moved away from surrealism into his classic period.
Salvador Dali's portfolio of work proves his diversity as a constantly growing and evolving artist.
