Ralph Lauren, formerly known as Ralph Lifschitz, was born in The Bronx, New York on October 14, 1939. The Ralph Lauren name, one of the most globally recognized names in the fashion industry today, took flight when Ralph’s brother Jerry changed their last name from Lifshitz to Lauren in the year 1955.

 

Ralph Lauren studied business for two years at Baruch College and served in the United States Army a short time after his college career. Surprisingly, Lauren never studied fashion, unlike most of the top names from the upper echelon of the fashion industry, but instead worked as a salesperson after his army discharge at business and casual clothing store Brooks Brothers. After leaving Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren worked at Beau Brummell Neckwear, where he created a very successful necktie business known to the fashion world as Polo. In 1968, Ralph Lauren branched out completely from the clothing store business and launched his own full line of Polo menswear, soon to be followed by an impressive line of women’s wear in 1971.
