GEOFFREY BEENE – DESIGNER HISTORY
Geoffrey Beene was born on August 30, 1924, in Haynesville, Louisiana. Initially a student of medicine at Tulane University, he dropped out of college in 1946 after three years of study. The following year, he moved to New York to study fashion at the Traphagen School of Fashion. After graduating, Geoffrey worked in a number of design houses in both New York and Paris, among them, Teal Traina and Harmay.
Geoffrey Beene launched his own eponymous design house in Manhattan in 1963 where he became a favorite designer for many celebrities and dignitaries, including Faye Dunaway, Nancy Reagan, Glenn Close and others. For more than 40 years, he was recognized as an innovator in the industry and for his unique ability to creatively merge conservative and luxury fabrics in a single design. In 1995, Geoffrey Beene was nominated for the Designer of the Century and Beyond Award by the Fashion Group International.
Geoffrey Beene died on September 28, 2004 due to complications from cancer. In honor of his legendary contribution to the fashion world, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) named their Lifetime Achievement Award after Beene.
