ESTéE LAUDER
History of Estée Lauder Designs
The Estée Lauder name goes hand-in-hand with cosmetics. Estée Lauder created a multi-billion-dollar-a-year empire together with her on-again, off-again, husband Joseph. Estée Lauder Cos. was created as a family business – first selling skin creams to beauty shops, beach clubs and resorts. The Estée Lauder line slowly expanded into major NYC department stores making it a famous name in the cosmetic industry. It now controls up to 45% of the U.S. department store cosmetics market
Estée Lauder died in 1997 at the age of 100. She left behind a legacy of creating revolutionary beauty product, based on her successful sales tactics and marketing savvy, along with her ability to deliver consistently high quality goods. In addition Estée Lauder is credited with introducing the concept of free samples to consumers.
During her illustrious career she enjoyed many accolades including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and being named the only woman on Time Magazine's list of 20 most influential business geniuses of the 20th century (1998).
Today Estée Lauder is headquartered in Manhattan, with Estée’s eldest son, Leonard at the helm as Chief Executive of the company and Chairman of the Board. Keeping it a family business, her grandchildren are in key positions. Estée Lauder now includes a powerhouse subdivision, Clinique.
