CHANEL

History of the Coco Chanel Designer Brand

Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel, founder of the House of Chanel, was born in 1883, beginning her fashion career at age 26 in 1909. Taking the fashion industry by storm, Chanel introduced new and original designs that exuded the elegance, sophistication and glamour associated with the world-famous Chanel name to this day. The Chanel name, identified by the fashion world with signature knee-length skirts and boxy jackets, quickly became a symbol of French elitism. Coco Chanel served as Chief Designer to the Chanel brand, from 1909 until her death in 1971.

Chanel No. 5 Goes Down in History

Coco Chanel released her first perfume in 1921, a scent that would later become the single most recognized women's fragrance on the planet. The name of this world-renowned and globally recognized perfume was Chanel No. 5. Thirty-four years after the release of the groundbreaking Chanel No. 5 Coco Chanel introduced her first men's fragrance to the public, a scent named Pour Monsieur. A popular line of numerous Chanel fragrances would emerge after her death, including Cristalle au de toilette and Antaeus for men.

Karl Lagerfeld Honors the Late Coco Chanel

Along with the 1981 induction of Karl Lagerfeld as Artistic Director of Chanel Fashion came a multitude of successful scents under the market-dominating Chanel brand. In 1984 Lagerfeld launched Coco, a woman’s fragrance honoring the late iconic designer. Following the success of Chanel’s Coco, Lagerfeld released a men’s fragrance in 1996 named Allure Homme, a cologne derived from the immensely popular female scent Allure. The most recent perfume from the Chanel brand to make its debut is a women’s fragrance called Chance.
