Oscar de la Renta was born July 22, 1932 in the Dominican Republic. He moved to Spain in 1950 to study painting but quickly changed over to fashion design. He began sketching fashion items for a number of leading Spanish fashion houses, until landing an apprenticeship with Spain's most renowned couturier, Cristóbal Balenciaga.
