Marc Jacobs' rise to fashion fame was not without its missteps; early on, Oscar de la Renta accused Jacobs of being a "copyist," and in 2008 he was accused of plagiarism (which was settled monetarily for an unknown amount). Through it all, Marc Jacobs has continued to produce designs known for their subtle elegance without flash, saying his clothes are "Not hot. Never. Never."
