Hubert James Taffin de Givenchy was born in 1927 in France. Fashion was clearly in his blood, as he was raised by his grandfather, a tapestry maker. Givenchy spent a great deal of time learning to appreciate the beauty of tapestry and its craftsmanship. He studied at the Ecole de Beaux Arts part time while working alongside other prestigious designers until he opened his own house in 1952.

Although Givenchy retired from the fashion world in 1995 he is considered one of the leading designers of contemporary luxury. His design house has been a subsidiary of LVMH Moët Hennessy - Louis Vuitton Group since 1987, makers of fine fashion, fragrances and cosmetics.
