GIANNI VERSACE DESIGNER HISTORY
Gianni Versace is a name synonymous with fashion. Born in 1946 in southern Italy, Gianni Versace embarked on his fashion career by working as a buyer in his mother's clothing store. By age 22 he was designing clothes for a local garment maker to sell in his mother's store. His popularity as a designer eventually grew beyond the store and soon he became known and respected in Milan, the Italian fashion capital.
In 1974 Versace began designing clothes for Florentine Flowers. The success of that line formed the foundation for his becoming one of the world's most famous and innovative fashion designers. Versace united the worlds of fashion and entertainment and his shows were more than just fashion shows, they were pop culture events.
Gianni Versace was shot and killed by serial killer Andrew Cunanan on July 15, 1997. Although Versace's life was cut tragically short, his legacy continues to influence the worlds of apparel, accessories, perfume and cologne.
