ELIZABETH TAYLOR – DESIGNER HISTORY

Elizabeth Taylor was born in Hampstead, London on February 27, 1932. She was the child of two Americans, Francis Lenn Taylor and Sara Viola Warmbrodt, who happened to be residing in England at the time of her birth. Her father was an art dealer and her mother was an actress who went by the stage name, Sara Sothern. Elizabeth entered the arts at the young age of three when she started taking ballet lessons. While the world was preparing for World War II, Elizabeth and her family moved back to California where she made her first appearance in motion pictures at the age of nine.

Elizabeth Taylor’s Hollywood success started with her 1943 film, Lassie Come Home, which also starred her life-long friend, Roddy McDowall. Her first leading role came the very next year in the film National Velvet, in which she co-starred with Mickey Rooney. In 1960, the actress was awarded her first Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the film, Butterfield 8. She won the prize again in 1966 for her role in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? But perhaps her greatest accomplishment in Hollywood came in 1963 when she became the highest paid movie star at the time for her role in Cleopatra, for which she was paid one million dollars.

In 1987, Elizabeth Taylor started a new venture into the world of fragrance design and her first perfume, Passion, was an instant blockbuster. Launched in 1991, her follow-up fragrance, White Diamonds, has been a mainstay on the Top 10 Bestselling Fragrances List for over a decade and in 2008, it was the best selling celebrity fragrance in the world.
