CHRISTIAN DIOR
History of the Christian Dior Design House
Fashion designer Christian Dior was born in 1905 in Normandy, France. After studying political science and serving in the military, Dior returned to Paris in 1935 and began his design career by selling personalized sketches of hat and dress designs. Initially, Dior found greater success with his hat sketches than he did for his dresses, but after focusing on his dress designs, he was soon hired by Robert Piguet in 1938.
Christian served in the South of France during the war but returned once again to Paris in 1941 to work for Lucien Lelong design house. Eventually, with the help of textile manufacturer Marcel Boussac, Dior was able to open his own design house in 1946. After Dio'rs death in 1957, his assistant Yves Saint Laurent became head designer of the Dior design house and introduced his first collection for the house based on the trapeze dress. Parfums Christian Dior, the make-up and perfumery line of Christian Dior also developed under the work of Saint Laurent.
